GORGEOUS TRAILS AND WALKS

Reservoir Walk

Walk down the driveway and turn right at the cattle grid at the bottom of the hill. Continue to the end of this track. Turn left through the gate into Castle Carrock. Just past waterworks but before the pub turn left up track Signposted ‘The Reservoir’. Continue to the end of this path, which joins the road and follow the reservoir road home.
Note: Track up out of the village can get very muddy if there has been lots of rain – you may require wellies or boots!
Variation: Rather than come back up the track out of the village you may wish to walk back along the road. Follow the road past ‘The Weary’ (village pub on your left) and continue round to the left, out of the village. Turn left at the Tottergill 1 1/4 miles’ sign. Follow the reservoir road home.

Fell Walk

Walk down the driveway and turn right at the cattle grid at the bottom of the hill. Continue to the end of this track. Turn right through the gate and follow the road up the hill until you see a stile and footpath sign to ‘Brakenthwaite’ on the right-hand side. Go over the style and straight through the first field. Go over the next stile and keeping the wall on your left, continue following the edge of the field, around to the right, until you reach the next style in the corner of this field. Go straight through this field and the next one keeping the wall on your right-hand side. Go through the gate (and have a look down to the right atTottergill!) Walk down the hill until you reach a gate at the bottom on the right. Go over this gate with ‘private sign on, and through the next two, bringing you back into our yard.

Greenwell & Gelt Woods Walks
*For Gelt Woods walk follow instructions in Green.

Walk down the drive, turn left at the cattle grid and follow the reservoir track back to the main road where you drove in. Turn right and walk down road. At the corner go down the track on the left-hand side next to the gate which goes by the houses. Follow this track (can be muddy!) and at the bottom turn left, continue on and go through the gate into the gravel farm yard. Continue through the houses and follow the road round to the left. Keep following this road until you reach the T-junction. Turn right and walk down the hill.

*Go under the arches and across the junction following the footpath sign, through the gate into Gelt Woods. There are many routes and paths in the woods but the main path runs along by the river and has benches along the way to take a break or stop with a picnic. Turn around and follow the same track back out of Gelt Woods. Cross the road at the junction and go back under the
arch – signed ‘Greenwell 3⁄4’.) Turn (left*) right at the footpath sign to ‘Greenwell’ and go over the stile. Follow the edge of the field with the river on your left until you come to another stile. Go over this and follow the path back to the road you came on.

Talkin Fell

Talkin Fell is a short walk from near Castle Carrock on the edge of the NorthPennines AONB.From Castle Rock, take the Geltsdale Road up the hill until you reach the bend inthe road at Jockey Shield, where there is limited verge parking. Follow the tracksto Hynam Bridge stretching the River Gelt. Go through the gate at the top, turnright and continue up the hill.
